Sunday, April 13, 2008
BUDGET and proper training were some of the key elements that were included into the resolution of the Design and Technology (D&T) Conference and Workshop.
This was stated by Shim Guek Lan, a participant of the conference and workshop who is also the Chief Co-ordinator for SPN 21 in Home Science and Food and Nutrition at the closing ceremony of the D&T Conference and Workshop.
In an interview with The Brunei Times, she stated that "it is high time for students to learn D&T in both theory and practice" and views it to be a good subject as it requires equal amounts of skills and creativity.
However, she suggested that training be provided for the teaching staffs before it is implemented into the curriculum and to have a technical assistant available to assist students in D&T.
"Currently, lab assistants are only provided for science subject but D&T will also need some form of assistance in terms of handling equipment and tools," she added.
For Hj Mohd Reizal Mohd Ali, a representative speaker for the participants at the closing ceremony, expressed his satisfaction that the workshop had benefited him greatly as a teacher in the development of skills.
Hj Mohd Reizal did not deny that there was a need for D&T in the country as well as a high number of talented students.
Coming from an architectural background, he highlighted the need to nurture talented students and to allow room for their creativity and skills.
The teacher from Sharif Ali Secondary School, concluded that D&T is an "expensive" subject as it requires a facility for students to use, not to mention equipments and tools.
Nonetheless, he said that he was looking forward for a certain amount of budget to be set aside and for D&T to be seriously as a subject.
According to Hj Mohd Reizal, only three schools in the capital have already implemented the D&T subject and they are Jerudong International School, International School Brunei and Rimba Secondary School.
Hajah Kartika Haji Othman said that she had learned a lot from the workshop and conference.
The workshops that were held also taught the participants how to plan lessons on D&T, she added.
Nurrooqiah Abdullah Sian, another participant, went on to explain the difficulty level as well as the difference of the subject in comparison with Arts and Crafts.
She said with D&T, more thinking was needed in terms of technical and structural detail as well as measurements.
Not only that, she added a general understanding of Mathematics, Science and English subjects was also needed to excel in D&T.
Another participant from BSN Pg Mohd Yusof Secondary School Lorong 3, Zuheda Hj Jamil, the workshops facilitated the teachers in terms of good ideas to be implemented.
"I think it is good to be implemented in D&T as well as ICT" as the subject of D&T allows the students to create computer parts as well as in the process of designing.
