TWENTY-FOUR students yesterday took part in the first-ever National Mathematics Olympiad organised by the Science, Technology and Environment Partnership Centre.

The National Mathematics Olympiad is an individual academic competition which consists of "written power test" questions prepared by Dr Saiful Azmi Hj Husain from the Mathematics Department at the Universiti Brunei Darussalam.

"The Olympiad was prepared on a national level, which would suit the current knowledge of A' level lower sixth students," said one of the officers in charge of overseeing the Olympiad.

He added that the marking will be made by A' level teachers, who are also committee members of the National Olympiad, and would later be moderated by Dr Saiful.

Winners, who will get gold, silver and bronze medals, along with certificates, will be announced in May.

The 24 participants represented six schools: the Maktab Sains Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan, Maktab Duli Pengiran Muda Al-Muhtadee Billah, Sixth Form Centre Berakas, Hassanal Bolkiah Arabic Secondary School for Boys, Sayyidina Othman secondary school and Sayyidina Ali secondary School.

The Science, Technology and Environment Partnership Centre also organised the National Physics Olympiad held on Tuesday, where 27 students participated.

With the National Olympiad successfully conducted, about three more future events will be held: Primary School Science Olympiad, Primary School Mathematics Olympiad and Secondary School Science Olympiad.
