SPREAD the word: Road accidents can be reduced, if more motorists know and practise the principles of safe driving.
Passing on the road safety message is the latest initiative by Brunei Shell Petroleum (BSP) to cut down on road accidents through its Tell-A-Friend road safety campaign.
The campaign, which BSP managing director Dr Grahaeme Anderson said has the main objective of "reaching out to people and reinforcing the road safety message in a deep and personal way", was launched yesterday at the Oil and Gas Discovery Centre in Seria.
The Tell-A-Friend initiative is an extension of the earlier phases of the government-implemented national road safety campaign on raising awareness and enforcement.
This third phase centres on imbuing the road safety message and spreading it to others, so as to encourage motorists to make the commitment to become safer drivers, noted Anderson.
The campaign expounds on the power of word-of-mouth and the Bruneian spirit of giving, sharing and caring.
"Why not extend the same spirit of caring and looking after each other by sharing the message of road safety?" he said. "This is how we came up with the idea of Tell-A-Friend as a launch pad to engage as many people as possible to commit to becoming safer drivers."
Anderson also highlighted BSP's success in ensuring almost total compliance to wearing of seat belts among the 10,000 BSP employees and its contractors. This is done through regular spot checks, educational campaigns and leadership by example.
"We make sure all directors and managers, including myself, put on their seat belts on every trip," he said.
The launch yesterday, attended by about 500 BSP employees and its contractors, further underscored the importance of road safety by featuring several sketches on undesirable consequences of reckless road use.
Two speakers who had been involved in car accidents shared their experiences and urged those in attendance to adhere to road regulations.
The campaign was launched by the Commissioner of the Royal Brunei Police Force, Pehin Datu Kerma Setia Dato Paduka Seri Awang Zainuddin Jalani.
