HERE'S a simple way you can help save the earth: Bring your own, reusable bag, and refuse plastic ones.

This is the message a local health, safety and environment (HSE) consultancy company, P-EWI Brunei, and the Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation want to promote to the public, and they are giving away 1,500 reusable bags to kickstart the campaign to cut down on plastic bags.

The initiative, held in conjunction with this year's Earth Day, has the slogan 'BYOB - Bring Your Own Bag' and aims to get local shops and shoppers to switch to using more environment-friendly bags and curb plastic bag usage. Made of dye-free natural cotton, the bags carry the BYOB and Earth Day 2008 logos, as well as those of the department and the sponsor, which are all printed using non-toxic ink.

The campaign was launched yesterday with the handing over of the bags from sponsor P-EWI Brunei to the department's representative, Senior Environmental Officer Martinah Hj Tamit, who heads the department's Environmental Management and Planning Section.

P-EWI was represented by its Managing Director, Stewart Olney and Environmental Manager Rizan Latif.

"Donating these reusable, environmentally-friendly shopping bags, for use in place of disposable plastic bags, is just a tiny start and we hope it will encourage the general public to think and act in increasingly environmentally-conscious and friendly ways," said Olney.

Rizan echoed the statement, and pointed out the damaging effects of plastic bags on the environment, including on marine life. "Our turtles and sea birds are being affected by plastic bags (that are washed out to sea).

They confuse the plastic bags for food and so choke on them, or are suffocated when they are caught in the bags," he remarked, adding that Brunei has three species of turtles the green turtle, hawksbill and Olive Ridley all of which are endangered.

Martinah applauded the firm's enthusiasm in supporting the department's initiatives.

A strong supporter of environmental causes, P-EWI Brunei has sponsored many environment-related events in the country. Most recently, the company was the major sponsor for the Forestry Department's Nature Camp in conjunction with the World Forestry Day. The firm also gives financial backing for Brunei's part in the Heart of Borneo initiative.
