Brunei, Indonesia ties hit a new high

HIS Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam yesterday expressed the hope that Brunei's youth will carry the prestige of the nation and its people, affirming their position as the sultanate's most valuable asset.

Delivering a titah during a State banquet hosted by Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono at Merdeka Palace in the capital, His Majesty said the youth need to be guided and nurtured in the right direction so that they understand and realise the importance of their role and contribution to the country's development.

Prior to the State banquet, His Majesty, on a three-day State visit to the world's most populous muslim-majority nation, witnessed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two countries in the area of cultural cooperation.

"It is hoped that the MoU signed this afternoon will bear fruit to bilateral activities in this field. What I really hope is that future activities (stemming from the MoU) will be able to give top priority to our youth's involvement," His Majesty said.

"This is because in this era, the youth is the most valuable asset for a country. They are always hoped to carry the prestige of the nation and its people."

In this direction, his Majesty said the youth's involvement in bilateral cooperation in the areas of education and culture needs to be constantly encouraged.

The MoU was signed by the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Dewa Major General (Rtd) Dato Seri Pahlawan Hj Mohammad Hj Daud on Brunei's behalf while Indonesian Culture and Tourism Minister Ir Jero Wacik SE signed on behalf of the Indonesian government.

Meanwhile, His Majesty's Indonesian counterpart hailed the close ties between Brunei and Indonesia, saying that it serves as an important cause to strengthen the relationship.

Earlier in the afternoon, His Majesty and Her Majesty Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Hjh Saleha paid a courtesy call on President Yudhoyono and his spouse.President Yudhoyono said in his speech during the banquet that both leaders have agreed to increase economic cooperation, particularly in the field of trade and investment.
