THE FINALS of the Second Information Department-Belta Oratory Competition 2008 were held yesterday at the Manggis Ballroom of the Hua Ho Manggis Mall.
Eight students put their oratory skills to the test, but only one emerged victorious to show that he could capture the audience with his words.
With a speech titled "My Life as a Bruneian Youth in the 21st Century", Ak Mohd Fadhil Pg Hj Ali won the votes of the panel of judges.
Speaking from his own personal experiences, the Chung Hwa Middle School student spoke about his life.
He urged for youths to become the "branded citizens" in order to depict to the rest of the world of its uniqueness and way of life.
Beyond the eyes of the onlookers, Ak Mohd Fadhil admitted to The Brunei Times that he had felt nervous during his turn on the microphone. He said that he was inspired to win this competition by last year's winner from PDS Secondary School who told him that he was capable of winning first place.
During the first Information Department-Belta competition, Ak Mohd Fadhil, then in Form 4, had achieved the first runner-up position.
Knowledgeable in three languages, Ak Mohd Fadhil had the support of his teachers and family to thank for his accomplishment yesterday.
The topics for the finals were assigned to all eight finalists and the issues were related to this year's National Day theme, Tunas Bangsa. As soon as he received his topic, the father of Ak Mohd Fadhil immediately gave him ideas and input which could be utilised in his speech.
In preparation to the competition, he said that he practised everyday after school with his teachers.
As holder of the coveted Pehin Abdul Rahman Taib Challenge Trophy, Ak Mohd Fadhil said that he was glad to have won first place. He commented that the contest could improve the participants in the area of public speaking. He echoed the slogan of the competition by saying that it trained "each and every one of (them) to stand up and speak out".
The runner-up and the second runner-up of this year's contest were Nikita Ashok Ramchandani of St George's School and Chong Jia Yi of Sayyidina Ali Secondary School, respectively.
The winners received cash prizes, trophies, books and book vouchers, sponsored by the British Council and Macmillan Publishers.
Among the contest's objectives are to provide upper secondary students with the opportunity to experience public speaking, and to develop the level of excellence in their oral English skills. There were calls for the competition to be turned into an annual event.
The qualifying rounds were held in March at Sayyidina Hussain Secondary School in Jerudong.
