INTERACTING and acquiring additional competencies through experiential learning on team spirit is critical and useful for implementing the role of Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) as one of the engines of growth for knowledge management in the nation.
This was stated by Hj Jalil Hj Mail, the acting Assistant Registrar and Secretary of UBD, at the closing ceremony of the Workshop on Enhancing Teamwork yesterday.
He also emphasised the necessity of the nation as a whole to embark on implementing the Vision Brunei 2035.
One of the importances of the Vision Brunei 2035 is how human resource development has been identified as a strategic foundation for enhancing and development, not only intellectually but more spiritually and emotionally, he said.
To make the learning cycle effective, the role of moderators with relevant experience and expertise who can facilitate such forums play a crucial role, he said.
He further said that experiential learning will facilitate and benefit the community as it becomes an evolutionary process.
However, the effectiveness of the programme in upgrading the skills will depend ultimately on the people, including practitioners at the main foundation level.
Hj Jalil said that "a team is not a mere group of individuals who work at the same location or have the same logo or vision or mission but made up of people who may be unequal in experience, talent and education but, are equal in their commitment to working together to achieve the goals and objectives of the organisation such as UBD, each other and our clients, customers and stakeholders."
For the university to become a successful institution, it needs to stop looking at its organisation as departments, decisions or faculties or administrative units, he said.
He added that the institution cannot afford to focus and operate only within its own little administrative boundaries and must look at the bigger picture and resolve work together in ways that may or may not have been done before. Stressing on the need to cooperate with others, or teamwork, he said that it does not happen by accident and the very same teamwork requires a certain level of commitment and effort, as well as the willingness to accept the uniqueness of others and an appreciation of diversity.
He highlighted the importance of how the national progress depended on productive people as they are the assets of the nation in contributing to the country's socio-economic development and making UBD as an outstanding centre of learning.
