FOR over 49 years the Brunei Youth Council (MBB) has had a direct hand in the development and progress of the nation's youth and over the years their involvement is evident in all aspects of the community especially education and economy, said Minister of Religious Affairs yesterday.

Pehin Jawatan Luar Pekerma Raja Dato Seri Utama Dr Ustaz Hj Mohd Zain Hj Serudin pointed out that in the early 60s and 70s, the dedication, determination and quality of its leaders helped shape the community into what it is today.

The minister highlighted these during the council's General Congress for Appointments of Office held at the Islamic Da'wah Centre in Berakas, yesterday.

Pehin Dato Dr Ustaz Hj Mohd Zain, the former president of MBB, was among the many former council members whose initiative to outline the education system in the country more towards religious approach, still stands to this very day.

He was also part of the early council members who established bilateral relations with international youth associations and organisations such as the World Assembly of Youth and World Assembly of Muslim Youth.

"The direction of the youths in the nation's development in the past were clear cut and obvious as it led to the progress of the community in all directions," said the minister.

"The question now is what are the needs of today's youth and in what direction are they headed towards."He went on to say that through the National Youth Congress that was held recently he had the opportunity to catch a glimpse of these needs and the direction during the ministers' council session where participants were given the time to present their ideas and opinions to the ministers.

"During this session it was understood that the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports has set a fine example by managing to collectively pool the youths minds and resources to aid the development of the Brunei Youth Council in this day and age," said the minister.

He stated that in line with this year's National Youth Council theme which was "Empowering Youths: Our Voice, Our Future", the needs to empower the youths should be guided by knowledge and experience and according to Islam.

The best way to accomplish this, the minister added, would be by taking the life of the Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) as a role model for youths.

The council's general congress for appointment of offices is aimed at discussing and determining their action plan apart from appointing members to council.

Part of the general congress was also to produce statements for the Administration Committee's finances and to give an estimate on the operational costs for the following year.

The general congress also discussed the location for next year's meeting including discussing other relevant matters in the development of the nation's youth.

The congress was attended by members of the committee and youth association leaders from all the four districts.
