Promoting use of Japanese

MEMBERS of the public for the first time are invited to take part in the Japanese Speech Contest organised jointly by the Embassy of Japan and the Continuing Education Division of the Department of Technical Education, Ministry of Education.

The contest which is scheduled to take place on August 24, 2008 is aimed at encouraging students studying the Japanese language to show their oratory skills and talent by demonstrating their proficiency. It is also aimed to serve as a platform towards enhancing friendship and mutual understanding between Brunei and Japan. Contestants are required to come up with original three-minute speeches on any theme except political and religious matters.

Participants are required to be residents of Brunei Darussalam where one of their parents must not be Japanese. Anybody who has studied in Japan for more than three months in the last five years are barred from participating. The Beginner's Level is for those who have studied the Japanese language for less than two years as of August 1, 2008. While those with over two years of Japanese language studying experience can participate in the Advanced Level. However, it is still possible for those with less experience to join if they wished. As part of the Advanced Level, participants may also be required to answer an oral question from the judges after their speech.

Applications can be obtained from the Continuing Education Division of the Department of Technical Education, Ministry of Education or downloaded from the Embassy of Japan website (http://www.bn.emb-japan.go.jp/). Participants will also be required to submit their scripts using Japanese characters. (NAS1)
