THE Girl Guides Association of Brunei Darussalam officially launched its Girl Guides;' Wakaf and the association's shop yesterday.

Officiating at the launching of the Girl Guides Wakaf and Al-Wakaf Guides Shop was Her Royal Highness Princess Hajah Masna who is also the President of the association.

In her speech, Hajah Siti Hafsah Hj Abdul Halim, the Chief Commissioner of the Girl Guides Association said that the association's Girl Guides Wakaf was set up two years ago with the objective to help orphans and children who are less fortunate to purchase their Girl Guides uniforms, equipments such as badges, activity record booksand other items. However, it did not function at its fullest potential until earlier this year.

Hajah Siti Hafsah said that the Girl Guides Wakaf provides an opportunity for children to join the Girl Guides which is in line with the WAGGGS (World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts) mission to "enable girls and young women to develop their fullest potential as responsible citizens of the world".

The Wakaf also part of the association's action plan for 2007-2009 session, of which one of the objectives is to implement strategies on recruitment and retention membership strategy. It is also "based on the objective of Leadership Development that is "Capacity building to introduce a mentoring system for membership retention and succession."

It is hope that the Al-Wakaf Guides Shop will play an important part in generating income for the association.

At the ceremony 32 Brownies and seven Girl Guides from all the country's four district received contribution from the Wakaf presented by the guest of honour. Apart from receiving uniforms and equipment, the recipients are also exempted from any membership fees for camping trips, training and any other activities carried out by the association.

The Chief Commissioner also expressed hope that the recipients would continue to be active as much as possible even when they have reached adulthood as is in their saying of 'Once a guide, always a guide'.

According to one of the senior Girl Guides, donations from members of the public and other parties are more than welcome. They can come to the office on the Second Floor every Fridays or Sundays to hand in their contribution. (AAB1) The Brunei Times
