MALAYSIA Airlines (MAS) has extended their Everyday Low Fares (ELF) or zero fares to Brunei effective today, and customers can look forward to fly to various destinations in Southeast Asia at low rates.

The announcement was made during the media launch of ELF yesterday.

There are over one million seats available, and the move is part of MAS' strategies to deliver competitive fares daily.

Zero fare customers will only pay for the fuel surcharge, administration fees and airport tax. This applies to flights on Asean routes and on selected routes between Malaysia and China.

The cost of travelling to Kuala Lumpur and Kota Kinabalu from Brunei runs at $71, $103 to most Asean countries, $134 to Bangkok and Phuket and $139 and $189 to Hong Kong and Canton respectively.

The booking period for the ELF is open from May 21 until June 3 and between July 1 and December 14.

According to Yuzer Yusoff, the Brunei area manager for MAS, travellers can expect similar pricing of tickets to those currently being advertised by the airline for its domestic flights.

MAS is the first airline service to introduce this promotion, and believes that there will be no loss of revenues for the 60-year old airline. The one million seat represents 30 per cent surplus of seats, which would otherwise go unsold. The promotion also allows MAS to recover some of the fuel cost which would otherwise be lost as seats are perishable.

It also aims to showcase MAS' newest products and five-star services, including on board refreshments, convenient schedules, on-time departures, 20kg baggage allowance, allocated seats, among others.

The move is hoped to boost tourism and thus the economy, counter inflation and encourage better planning among travellers.

MAS initiated the ELF programme in conjunction with its recent transformation into a Five-Star Value Carrier, promising to deliver "five-star quality services at low prices".

Over the last two years, MAS has improved their pricing and inventory system, thus making successful returns without subsidies or aid. The move was under the carrier's initiative to reduce costs and to return to profitability.

Travellers have to do their booking online, through www.malaysiaairlines.com. They also have to book their flights at least 30 days before flight departure. The tickets are also non-refundable and all flight dates are final once tickets are purchased.

Additionally, the promotion is only available during lean flights, not on peak flights such as school holidays or other public holidays.

Malaysia Airlines first launched Everyday Low Fares on May 5 with one million zero fares for all its domestic route within Malaysia. Over 150,000 seats were sold since the announcement.
