Wednesday, May 21, 2008

A TOTAL of 233 educators, researchers, school teachers and administrators are participating in the 13th International Conference on Education, which opened yesterday.

According to the Dean of SHBIE (Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah Institute of Education) at Universiti Brunei Darussalam, Dr Poh Sing Huat, "the conference aims to provide participants an opportunity for professional networking and sharing of ideas and experience on educational matters or issues."

Themed 'Evolving Pedagogies: Meeting the Global Challenges of Diversity and Interdependence', the conference hopes to address the rapid changes, diverse and interdependent world of today, as it stipulates a need for new approaches to teaching and learning.

"Such approaches require pedagogies that would help learners to learn how to learn throughout their lives and in new contexts, transfer what they have learned to novel situations, and learn from the inherent variation present in their lives," said Dr Poh.

Some 94 participants are from overseas including Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore, Hong Kong, the United States of America, Nigeria, Middle East, Australia and Spain.

The annual conference is held for three days and over 140 working papers are expected to be presented in parallel sessions, including three keynote addresses by invited distinguished speakers Professor John Furlong, the director of the Department of Educational Studies at Oxford University; Professor Debra Myhill, the head of School Education and Lifelong Learning at Exeter University and Professor Lo Mun Ling, the head of Centre for Learning Study and School Partnership at the Hong Kong Institute of Education in the UK.

The conference was launched by Permanent Secretary (Higher Education) of the Ministry of Education Hj Mohd Daud Hj Mahmud. Also present was Vice Chancellor of UBD Dato Paduka Dr Hj Ismail Hj Duraman.

Last night, the participants also attended a welcoming dinner held at the Manggis Ballroom in Hua Ho Mall. (AAB1)
