Welcome for His Majesty

HIS Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah, the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, yesterday met the Indian Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, and discussed issues of bilateral cooperation and mutual concern.

After returning from Rashtrapati Bhawan (Presidential Palace) here in the morning, His Majesty drove to the official residence of the Indian Prime Minister, No7 Racecourse Road. There he attended a luncheon hosted in his honour by Dr Manmohan Singh.

In the afternoon, His Majesty consented to grant audiences to four prominent leaders in the Indian capital.

His Majesty the Sultan began his afternoon itinerary by having an audience with Indian Finance Minister, P Chidambaram, Minister of Defence, A K Antony, the Vice President of India, Hamid Ansari and Mrs Sonia Gandhi, Chairperson of United Progressive Alliance (UPA) and President of National Congress Party.

The audiences were held at the ITC Maurya where His Majesty the Sultan was residing during his time in New Delhi.

Earlier in the day, His Majesty the Sultan began the first day of the state visit with the official welcoming ceremony held at the Rashtrapati Bhawan. Upon the arrival at the Yellow Drawing Room of the Presidential Palace, His Majesty the Sultan was greeted by Indian President Mrs Pratibha Patil, Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, members of his cabinet and other senior government officials.

The Indian Prime Minister then introduced His Majesty the Sultan to the members of his cabinet, which included Home Minister Shivraj Patil; Minister of Tourism and Culture Mrs Ambika Soni; Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment Mrs Meira Kumar; Minister of State of Communications and Information Technology Jyotiraditya Scindia; Lt-Governor of Delhi Tejinder Khanna and the chief of Indian Navy Admiral Sureesh Mehta.

Due to heavy rains which lashed New Delhi the welcoming ceremony was held inside the Presidential Palace.

As per the proposed ceremony His Majesty was to inspect a guard of honour. The planned visit to Raj Ghat memorial to Mahatma Gandhi, was cancelled.
