TWO Bruneian students will be joining their Asean counterparts in Singapore to compete in the Olympiades Francophones, which starts today.
Raihan Nabilah Hj Ahmad Ghazali and Nurul Aqidah Madani, both from the Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan Science College, departed the sultanate yesterday afternoon for Singapore, where 20 students from Asean will participate in the sixth edition of the French speaking competition.
The competition, jointly organised by the French Embassy in Singapore and Seameo RELC, puts to the test three different French-speaking skills, namely lecture, expression skills and theatre.
The competitors will have their skills tested individually and as part of a mixed-nationality team. Participants are chosen by the education ministry in their respective countries, and each country is sending two representatives.
The Brunei representatives were chosen as they passed a screening process at the Alliance Francaise headquarters. They will be attending the event from May 26 until May 30.
Raihan said that she was very excited since "not everyone can speak French in Brunei" and that she was going to Singapore to converse with others who could speak the language. She related that she often speaks the foreign language with her younger sisters who all study French at the Science College.
"I am very excited to hear how (the other contestants) speak French... their different accents," she said. "We are opening up our minds to learn other cultures and we accept other cultures here (in Brunei)"
Nurul Aqidah felt "very lucky" to be representing her school and her country and hoped that she would make them proud.
Both said they were well prepared for the competition, and had attended classes with Delphine Renaut, the cultural and educational assistant for Alliance Francaise, to work on their role-playing skills.
During the competition, they will be supervised by Ak Aji Pg Matahir, a former French teacher at the Science College.
