Sunday, June 8, 2008
THE Malaysian High Commission yesterday invited some 300 people to celebrate the birthday of the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia, Seri Paduka Baginda Yang Di-Pertuan Agong XIII Al-Wathiqu Billah Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin Al-Marhum Sultan Mahmud Al-Muktafi Billah Shah at a reception held at the Malaysian High Commission.
Dato' Ku Jaafar Ku Shaari, the Malaysian High Commissioner to Brunei, attended the reception as guest of honour accompanied by his wife Datin Zakiah Dato' Hj Alias.
The event was full of merriment as it began with a choir singing performance by children of members of the High Commission who sang Malaysian patriotic songs.
All Malaysians in the room then performed a recital of the Malaysian pledge led by Ku Ahmad Ikmal Fikri Dato' Ku Jaafar, son of the Malaysian High Commissioner.
The High Commissioner in his speech announced that the birthday celebration of the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia will henceforth be held on the first Saturday of the month of June in order to accommodate a more accessible date for those wanting to attend.
Dato' Ku Jaafar went on to inform the guests that in honour of the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia's birthday, three separate activities had been previously held, namely the Agong Cup Badminton Championship which was held from June 1 to 3 and a Fun Day festival held two days ago.
The reception held last night marked the last activity to celebrate the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong's birthday.
The High Commissioner reminded his fellow Malaysians to preserve Malaysia's good name while in the sultanate by observing laws and regulations as well as customs and traditions practised here.
Following the speech, Dato' Ku Jaafar presented trophies to the winners of the Agong Cup Badminton Championship of which first place went to Persatuan Warga Malaysia (PWM), both in the Men's and Women's Division.
The Persatuan Kebajikan Melayu Se-Malaysia (PKMS) Men's Division took second place while the Malaysian High Commission won it for the Women's Division. Third place went to the Malaysian High Commission Men's Division while PKMS took the trophy for the Women's Division.
The trophy for overall best performance was presented to PWM Men's Division.
After presenting the trophies to the winners, Dato' Ku Jaafar and his wife signed the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong's birthday card and was led to the reception dinner where the event was concluded for the night.
