THE proposal of two new formations under the Brunei-Muara Youth Council, or Majlis Belia Daerah Brunei-Muara (MBDBM), was put forth yesterday at the first meeting of the MBDBM with youth associations from the Brunei-Muara district held at the Youth Centre in the capital.
The council's newly-appointed Vice-President, Hj Awang Mohd Yusof Hj Awang Murni, explained to the 11 representatives of the youth associations present at the meeting that although the proposal was put forth during the council's last session for 2005-08, the full list of activities lined up for that session did not allow for the execution of the formations until now.
To that end, the council hopes that this year will finally see the formation of both the "Sayap Putera and Puteri" and representative council which is hoped to aid the council in sharing responsibilities with organising youth activities.
The "Sayap Putera and Puteri" is to be embodied by youths of the country to organise activities specifically catering to the younger members of the community.
According to the MBDBM vice-president, "leaders have to give the youth a chance in organising their own activities for their association. As only youths would know what would appeal to other youths, in order to attract more youths to join the association".
Youths in possession of a degree in any discipline and those who possess excellent achievements in school or university, student representatives or those already in the workforce are hoped to be the future members of the "Sayap Putera and Puteri" to act as facilitators for MBDBM and the Brunei Youth Council or Majlis Belia Brunei (MBB).
Hj Awang Mohd Yusof said that the formation of the new wing is hoped to instil leadership qualities among Bruneian youths and further expressed the council's hope that the active involvement of the youths will bring about further development of youths in the district as well as the country.
Future members of the new wing are also expected to take on the role of Youth Ambassadors of Brunei, or Duta Kecil Belia Brunei, through conducting seminars, courses, working visits and meetings.
Touching on the formation of the representative council, the vice-president informed that youth associations affliated with the youth council were requested to nominate two lead representatives from their respective associations to be members of the representative council.
These representatives will act as communications officers of their respective associations and will be required to make decisions and execute action plans on behalf of their associations.
In his opening remarks, Jefri Arif Zain Arif, Permanent Chairman for the MBDBM said that it was "important to strengthen youth associations in Brunei-Muara to shape youth towards a more systematic and directed path".
"Associations are urged to combine their efforts in all aspects to create unity, and do things according to their own respective capacity. This can be done if every association can give their utmost commitment and initiative in MBDBM. This is important if we want the youth of Brunei to be united," he added.
The council is currently still in the process of updating each association's activities. Yesterday's meeting was hoped to enable representatives to share ideas and learn on how to improve their respective association's activities.
The meeting also included a reviewing session of the current status of associations affiliated with the youth council. A representative from the Kampong Mulaut Welfare and Sports Association (Persatuan Kebajikan and Sukan Kampong Mulaut) showed itself to be a keen organiser of sporting activities.
"This can act as a pulling force for youths to be more active and proactive in activities organised by their respective associations," said the representative.
The associations also were also seen to be collaborating with their respective Village Consultative Council and Mosque Council to organise Islamic religious events.
A representative from the Perbekal association also spoke of the group's establishment of a programme named "Caring Citizens" as a tool for converging donations to those affected by tragedies and hardship.
Other discussions on the agenda included the appointment of the new bureau of MBDBM and the upcoming activities of the youth council which includes the Malam Daulat in conjunction with His Majesty's birthday, Kembara Bakti and the National Youth Forum 2009 which will be held on June 12 this year.
