Friday, June 13, 2008
E-GOVERNMENT National Centre plays a part in the continuous efforts of His Majesty's Government to enhance the overall effectiveness of the implementation and management of e-Government initiatives.
The main role of the Centre, which is under the Prime Minister's Office, is in delivering common Information Communication Technology (ICT) services in terms of ICT operation services, ICT procurement services and ICT human resources that are related to the e-Government initiatives mainly in the Civil Service.
In an interview with The Brunei Times, Azhar Hj Ahmad, the acting director of e-Government national centre said: "The centre is directing all its efforts to achieve the objectives. During the past three months, the centre had been in the process to met these objectives."
With regards to the challenges facing the centre in their effort to implement the e-Government iniatives, he said: "The current challenge faced by the centre is the constraint of skilled and qualified local ICT workers. To overcome this shortages, the centre is looking at several ICT training programmes to beef up their talents and knowledge.
One of the reasons why the centre was established is to ensure more reliable and efficient services. It is part of the continuous efforts of His Majesty's Government to enhance the overall effectiveness of the implementation and management of e-Government initiatives.
The establishment of EGTAB (E-Govt Technical Authority Body) October last year complements the efforts to ensure more reliable and efficient services. EGTAB functions as a technical thinktank in managing e-Government programmes and projects.
The centre also aims to prepare various ministries towards the drive for a paperless government which is the end-result that e-Government wants to achieve.
Respective ministries are currently doing their part in achieving that objective. However, these requires a lot of groundwork and planning especially in terms of changing mindsets and business process re-engineering.
Implementing the e-Government initiative is up to the respective ministries with EGTAB advising on how to manage their e-Government programme or projects.
The administrative office of the centre is temporarily located at the Centre for Strategic Policy Studies (CSPS) building in Gadong
The centre which began operations on April 1 employs 40 local ICT technical officers who were transferred from various government departments to assist government agencies in setting up their own ICT infrastructure and system that will further enhance their capabilities via the Internet.
