STUDENTS should love and appreciate themselves so that they can avoid social problems and succeed in their studies.

This was the main message of the three-day motivational camp for students from low-income families sitting for their Penilaian Sijil Rendah (PSR) or final primary school exams, which closed yesterday. Themed "Love yourself, live in harmony" (Sayangi diri, hidup harmoni), the camp was sponsored by the Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah and facilitated by members of the Counselling and Career Guidance Unit of the education ministry. The programme hoped to mould the participants into future innovative visionaries and individuals with exemplary morals.

The camp was organised for 61 students who have been attending tuition classes sponsored by YSHHB most of them from Kg Bolkiah but only 42 were able to attend.

According to a foundation volunteer, the rest were unable to attend because they were not feeling well.

One of the participants, Md Al Musawwir Rahman, the best male student during the camp, said that in addition to enjoying himself and gaining new friendships, the experience has taught him discipline, how to learn from mistakes, and to be familiar with health issues such as personal hygiene. The best female student was Umi Nazirah Ramli.

Hj Ali Yusri Hj Abdul Ghafor, an officer from the Ministry of Education's Counselling and Career Guidance Unit said that the camp was about teaching the students to love themselves.

He believed that a child who does not have a solid foundation can be easily influenced by their friends into taking drugs, and felt it is the duty of educators to eradicate these social problems through various programmes on physical and mental activities, nurture and encourage the students to grow into strong individuals. He added that religion plays an important role to build a student's self-esteem.

The guest of honour yesterday was Hj Abdul Hamid Hj Janudin, a member of Yayasan's board of directors and one of the foundation's voluntary committee members.
