WITH the precious seconds ticking away, 100 teams participating in the second season of HSBC's Tri-Xtreme Challenge raced against time in the first stage yesterday to be among the top 40 teams in order to make it to the second stage and a step closer to the grand prize of $8,000.

The first stage of the competition, Xtreme Pursuit, kicked off at the Duli Pengiran Muda Al-Muhtadee Billah College track and field yesterday morning. At the sound of the airhorn, the 400 excited participants flooded out the gates and descended upon the just awakening Gadong.

Ready with a map, a question booklet and a bonus scorecard, the teams had to survive on their wits and observational skills to answer riddles and cryptic questions to score points.

In addition, scattered in the area were five bonus games that could give them a distinct advantage over others. The teams had three and a half hours to score a maximum of 120 points.

But be it puzzle-solving, mathematical equation, uncomplicated but strenuous exercise or even eating crackers, their indomitable spirits flowed through Gadong's every nook and cranny. While the possibility of winning $8,000 was an undeniable motivation, many just wanted the thrill of the hunt as well as the chance to meet other adrenaline-junkies along the way.

Just as in the first season of HSBC's Tri-Xtreme Challenge that took place in 2005, this year's events will also take place on three consecutive Sundays.

According to HSBC, response from the public since it opened up pre-registration online was overwhelming. Over 150 people registered online since it opened for three weeks from May 15 to June 11.

A 27-year old coordinator and volunteer for the Tri-Xtreme Challenge who wished to be called only as Dee told The Brunei Times that participants this year will definitely be up for a good challenge. This year's event was open to 18 to 30-year-olds.

The top 40 teams were then announced later in the day and will once again fight for mental and physical supremacy in Jerudong Park on June 29 for the second stage of the competition, the Xtreme Adventure.
