Parents must spend quality time with children, says RBAF chief

PARENTS should spend as much quality time as possible with their children to educate and guide them in attaining competitive advantage, leading toward the development of competitive a society.

This was stated by the Royal Brunei Armed Forces (RBAF) Commander, Pehin Datu Lailaraja Major General Dato Paduka Seri Hj Halbi Hj Md Yussof, in his speech at the closing ceremony for Empowering Youth programme for children of the armed force's personnel at Surau Berakas Garrison yesterday.

The programme was held during the second-term school break to make full use of the children's free time

As parents are one of the informal education facilitator as opposed to educational institutions that provide formal education, they should encourage children to participate in the programme as it helps youth in character development and prepare them for the future life challenges.

The guest of honour congratulated the participants for making use of their time in joining the activities which were actually a platform for learning and improving the religious aspect of the individuals towards becoming an outstanding youth.

The event's yesterday started off with al-Quran recitation by Harun Al-Rashid Husin, followed by two nasyid performances by all 21 participants and certificate presentation by the guest of honour.

The 21 students aged between 12 and 17 years old were joined the RBAF Commander for a group photo after performing mass Asar prayers.

During the programme, the participants took part in a range of activities from field trip to mosques in Tutong and Brunei-Muara to community work, The Kampung Batu Marang Community Programme organised by the RBAF's Religious Department and Counselling Centre

One of the participants Md Kahirul Rani, 15, from Sayyidina Abu Bakar Secondary School, said the programme exposed him to the life of the Prophet Mohammad (Peace be upon him).

He added that during the programme they were taught the practical side of religious duties. For instance how to perform prayer properly, sleep properly, according to the Sunnah among others. (DKR1)
