HALAL Branding is making good progress and will be ready for unveiling during the upcoming Third International Halal Products Exposition scheduled for August 14 to 17.

This was stated by the Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources (MIPR), Dato Paduka Hj Mohd Hamid Hj Mohd Jaafar in his opening remarks at the Forum and Workshop on "Branding: A Strategic Marketing Tool for SMEs Competitiveness".

He said that due to the ever-increasing competitive global environment, branding in Brunei Darussalam has to be taken up a notch given the economic circumstances in order to enhance its competitiveness to succeed.

The Permanent Secretary also mentioned that "Branding" was indeed some of the initiatives the MIPR has pursued and is part of their overall strategy.

He said that such enhancements revolved around the basis of finding and developing a particular niche in Brunei Darussalam.

The Permanent Secretary highlighted that "it was required of us to invest in the research and development of products and services that are up to the standards the world's consumers have come to expect".

A marketing strategy to deliver the best possible prices for potential Bruneian products and services is vital, he said.

Dato Paduka Hj Mohd Hamid shared with the participants some of the branding work that is currently being done in Brunei in its plans to realise the nation's vision for a diversified, sustainable and competitive Brunei economy.

One was the development of a global Halal market and second is the branding work of the tourism industry, specifically eco-tourism.

The Permanent Secretary said that the development of the Halal branding as consented to by His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam will be a major breakthrough as it will be the first time for the country to move towards the branding of Halal.

He explained that the Brunei Halal branding will have every chance of success to be a truly global player in the Halal market driven by the concept of a Malay, Muslim Monarchy.

"Its credibility will be also further enhanced with the rapid development of its Halal science capability through working closely together with the higher learning institutions such as the Universiti Brunei Darussalam as well as the network of well-developed laboratories in Brunei and abroad," Dato Paduka Hj Mohd Hamid added.

He took the opportunity to call upon local SMEs (Small and Medium Enterprises), particularly in the food production sector to join in benefiting from the Brunei Halal Brand.

As for the tourism industry, Brunei has since obtained some form of success in sustainable forest management and active involvement in the Heart of Borneo.

The Heart of Borneo initiative has already captured global attention and turned Brunei into a new exciting eco-tourism destination, said the Permanent Secretary.

Last year alone, an achievement of nearly 13 per cent growth was recorded in terms of tourist arrivals.

Not to mention the development of the Taman Negara Ulu Temburong into the Ulu-ulu Resort through the Public-Private Partnership.

Currently, in development is the exploration of Tasek Merimbun in Tutong, he announced.

The Forum and Workshop on "Branding: A Strategic Marketing Tool for SMEs Competitiveness" was held at The Empire Hotel and Country Club yesterday.
