Brunei, Thailand pledge to strengthen bilateral ties

HM: Asean leaders face numerous challenges in modernising region

IN HONOUR of Samak Sundaravej, the Prime Minister of Thailand who is on a two-day visit to Brunei Darussalam, His Majesty Sultan Hj Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah, the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam yesterday hosted an official dinner banquet at Istana Nurul Iman following an audience and a private meeting.

His Majesty and the Prime Minister was accompanied into the banquet hall by the Crown Prince, His Royal Highness Prince Al-Muhtadee Billah, His Royal Highness Prince Mohamed Bolkiah, His Royal Highness Prince Hj Sufri Bolkiah, Her Royal Highness Princess Hjh Masna, and His Royal Highness Prince Hj Abdul Malek.

Also invited to the banquet were cabinet ministers, state dignitaries, senior government officials, ambassadors and high commissioners to Brunei Darussalam.

During the banquet, His Majesty congratulated the Prime Minister on his appointment and said that he looked forward to working closely with him and his administration to continue the lasting commitment between Brunei Darussalam and Thailand.

Though the Prime Minister's stay in the country is brief, His Majesty expressed confidence that it would be an opportunity to review the commitment between the two countries.

This year marks 25 years of diplomatic relations between Brunei Darussalam and Thailand which His Majesty commented has been a brief but successful period. Given the history between the two countries and strong ties in various areas that have benefited their people, His Majesty expressed the hope that there will be more to come, particularly to keep up with the exceptional demand of today's world in social, economic and political areas.

As leaders of Asean, His Majesty acknowledged that challenges will not lessen in scope and intensity. He also added that leaders of the Asean Charter will face many in their pursuit of making the region a modern one.

In his speech, the Prime Minister described the relations between Brunei Darussalam and Thailand as "harmonious, cordial, strong and mature", stating that both countries share fundamental core values, respect and reverence for the institution of the monarchy. He went on to say that their royal families are the "strength and pillar" of their respective countries, playing a significant part in enhancing closer ties between the two countries and their people.

The firm relationship between Brunei Darussalam and Thailand have been nurtured by exchanges on all levels. Samak Sundaravej further pointed out that His Majesty's visit to Thailand during the 60th anniversary of His Majesty King Bhumibol's ascension to the throne in 2006 was the most memorable.

He also expressed his honour and opportunity to receive His Majesty to Thailand for the 14th Asean Summit to be held from December 15 to 18 this year.
