THE Authority for Info-communications Technology (AiTi) now needs to prioritise the development of the information and communication industry, as it has already successfully prepared a strong foundation in management and regulations and guidelines for the industry.

This was said by the Minister of Communication, Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia Hj Abu Bakar Hj Apong, during the second AiTi Appreciation Night at the Rizqun International Hotel yesterday.

The minister urged AiTi to focus attention towards achieving a large part of its functions and responsibility as stated in the AiTi Orders. "It is important as of now that more focus should be put on developing the infocommunications industry especially in Information Communication Technology (ICT)," he said.

He added that not all of the 21 roles and tasks of the AiTi should be carried out overnight, but it should identify the roles and tasks to be prioritised at assisting the development of the ICT sector.

"Each of the roles and tasks must be interpreted to become part of a plan at determining objectives or strategies that can be achieved, so that they can be evaluated. This should be a way-forward guide for AiTi within the next three to five years," he said.

He added that AiTi faces several challenges ahead, but was confident with the budget allocation stated in the National Development Plan, it can achieve the nation's ICT plans and improve the capacity of local ICT companies towards equipping themselves to step forward at exploring and entering the regional market.

Last night's event also served as a welcoming ceremony for new Members of Authority as well as a farewell to former members.

Also present last night were Dato Paduka Hj Yusof Hj Abdul Hamid, Deputy Minister of Communications, directors and heads of government offices, senior government officials and heads of Telcos.

The event served to establish rapport between AiTi's Members of Authority, the management, staff and invited guests, while also honouring those who have contributed to AiTi since its establishment on January 1, 2003. Among those honoured were Dato Paduka Hj Mohd Yusof Hj Mohd Hassan, former chairman of AiTi (2005-2008), Dato Paduka Dr Hj Ismail Hj Duraman, Member of Authority (2003-2008), Hj Muhammad Syaifuddin Hj Abdullah, Member of Authority (2006-2008), Hj Sapawi Bolhassan, former Member of Authority (2006-2008) and Hj Ibrahim Ali, former chief executive (2005-2007).
