Sunday, July 20, 2008

THE first-ever Inaugural National Choir Competition for primary schools was held in the capital yesterday.

The competition was organised by the Co-curriculum Education Department from the Ministry of Education in conjunction with His Majesty's 62nd birthday celebrations.

Seven primary schools competed in the competition namely, Pehin Dato Jamil Primary School Zon I, Dato Marsal Primary School Zon II, Anggerek Desa Primary School Zon II, among others.

The objective of holding such events was to seek talents among these students, as a preparation for public speaking as well as giving a chance for these children to show their appreciation for His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah, the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam.

Cikgu Sukardi Kadri from the Co-curriculum Education Department said that through this competition, students will learn about teamwork, following instructions from teachers and competing healthily.

Eida Sahrinawaty Hj Amdan, a teacher from Anggerek Desa Primary School Zon II, said that their school encourages getting involved in such competitions as it enriches students' co-curricular activities.

Their school has won traditional dance competitions for the past three consecutive years, and the teacher said that perhaps in future workshops could be held to expose teachers to choir practice as she herself was new to it.

One school which participated in choir competition last night was Pehin Dato Jamil Primary School Zon I, which has been active in such competitions said Amalina Ali Rahman, one of the school's choir instructor.

Audiences were entertained with a traditional dance performance called "Japin Laila Sembah" by Raja Isteri Fatimah Primary School's female students and also the aduk-aduk dance by Kapok Primary School.

The competition started off with the first performance from Pehin Dato Jamil Primary School Zon I with their song "Doa and Harapan" followed by six other primary schools soon afterward.

The event ended with the prize awarded to winners. Rimba Primary School Zon II emerged champion with the runner-up place going to Lumapas Primary School Zon IV. The third place went to Anggerek Desa Primary School Zon II.
