Local students get ready for further studies in the UK

Tuesday, July 22, 2008

THE month of July is a busy one for students who are going to pursue their studies in the United Kingdom (UK).

Many first-time overseas students have completed their requisite medical check-up and are now awaiting to attend a briefing at Universiti Brunei Darussalam prior to their departure.

One such student, Sharifah Hashim, told The Brunei Times that she has chosen to attend Warwick University, as the university is renowned for its top courses.

The soon-to-be degree student has chosen politics as her field of study.

Sharifah related that at Warwick, she will take four modules each year, and of the eight examined for the final degree, five are chosen from the lists of options.

For the second year, students are eligible to participate in an exchange programme in one of the partnered universities in the United States.

This is a great opportunity for Bruneian students to experience both British politics as well as the American politics, said Sharifah, who expressed her joy at being accepted into one of the top universities in Britain.

Another student who will be joining Sharifah at Warwick is Alexander Lim Wei Loong. Alexander will be taking a three-year course on Law. The course will touch on the basics of law and also on property law because it concerns some of the most common situations in which laymen come into contact with law or lawyers.

In Brunei, only British law degrees are recognised.

Alexander said that he had chosen to study law so he can help people and be their voice in a court of law.

He added that being a lawyer is a huge reponsibility and taking the course will allow him to grow and mature.

Meanwhile, Dk Nur Amelia Roslee this year will be heading to the University of Leicester, where she is taking English and American studies.

The course will offer her insight on American literature and the culture of the American people.

She said she had chosen the university because it has a high ranking in the English subject.

Currently the university is ranked at number 12 in the list of top universities in Britain.

Dk Amelia hopes that she will be able to study in USA as part of her degree.

This year, like any other year, scores of students and civil servants undertaking further studies will be flying off between the months of August and September. (AIS1)
