AMATEUR radio plays a vital role in promoting Brunei as a tourist destination, especially the Heart of Borneo (HoB) initiative, the Deputy Minister of Industry and Primary Resources said yesterday.

Dato Paduka Hj Hamdillah Hj Abd Wahabwas speaking during the flag-off for the Fifth All Borneo Amateur Radio Festival at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium.

Dato Hj Hamdillah, who is also the incumbent chairman of the National HoB Council, added that as the Brunei Darussalam Amateur Radio Association (BDARA) will be holding its general meetings in Brunei, the association can also contribute to the MICE (Meeting, Incentive, Conference and Exhibition) industry in Brunei, boosting its status as a tourist destination through incentive visits and exhibitions.

He also touched on the importance of involving youths, as they represent the future generation of radio amateurs who can establish better relations with world communities.

About seven vehicles consisting of 17 members of the BDARA will be making a trip to Pontianak, Indonesia, where the festival is held, at the invitation of the Indonesian Amateur Radio Organisation (ORARI).

According to BDARA President Pg Salleh Ab Rahman Pg Hj Damit, Brunei will host the next All Borneo Amateur Radio Festival in 2009.

"I hope that selected members (of BDARA involved in the festival) will pay close attention and learn from the event so that we can organise it even better," he said.

He reminded the drivers to be careful on their journey to and from Pontianak, and urged them to learn as much as they can from the festival.

This is the first time Brunei is taking part in the three-day biennial event, which begins on July 25.

The Bruneian delegation is headed by Hj Yacob Dato Paduka Hj Sunny, BDARA's high secretary.

About 300 associations were expected to attend the festival, including those from Brunei, Malaysia, Indonesia and the Malay Archipelago.

The festival is aimed at creating friendship and testing individuals' abilities in amateur radio contests.

This year's festival will commemorate ORARI's 40th anniversary. (SHS1)
