BRIDGET ANG serenaded her way to win the coveted title of Kristal Kids Idol 2008, after belting out American Idol Kelly Clarkson's A Moment Like This in front of a packed crowd at The Mall yesterday. Nicknamed Gette during the competition, the 13-year-old with a big voice won the judges' vote with a perfect score on her vocals.

The Rimba Secondary School student, who stole the limelight with a score of 72.5 per cent, said that she was "very happy" to win the top spot after practising for a month for the competition at PJC Virtuoso Music School.

She received a $800 cash prize, one return air ticket to Bangkok, Thailand, a savings account worth $800 and two days one night stay at the Empire Hotel and Country Club.

The first runner-up of this year's competition was Sa'adatun Yasmeen Shukrimee, with a score of 58 per cent and in third place was Seribanun Omar who scored 53 per cent.

The competitors were judged in three main areas, namely tempo, vocals and performance. They were then given a score and the best overall percentage in all three areas was declared the winner.

Ten finalists gave the audience their all as they performed their musical numbers in a bid to win the grand prize for this year's competition.

One by one, the finalists aged from as young as eight to 13 years of age, took to the stage for their chance to wow the panel of adjudicators as well as the audience present yesterday. One contestant, Nurfarahiyah Rashkyna, otherwise known as "Farah", was the crowd's favourite. With her family carrying a banner to show their support for the eight-year-old, whilst shouting slogans of "Rock Sexy", Farah caused an uproar of whistles and continuous applause with her stage presence and animated vocal performance.

All 10 finalists received trophies, T-shirts and goodies.

The prizes were presented by the guest of honour at the event, Dk Hamidah Pg Othman, the senior PFS Sales and Support Manager of HSBC.

Some of the curious spectators stood on their tip-toes to steal a glance of the young stars on stage. As mobile phones, camcorders and cameras were thrust into the air to catch images of the spectacle amidst the standing crowd, others were restricted to just watching and enjoying the performances.

One spectator found it difficult to watch the performance as she was standing nearer to the back of the crowd, but said she enjoyed the finals nonetheless since she could hear the talented young singers perform.

"It's hard to see them perform, but everyone's cheering and I can tell that (the singers) are really good for their age," Fatin said.

The previous rounds of the competition were aired over the radio, where the public were able to vote for their favourite singers. The competition was held in conjunction with HM's 62nd birthday celebrations. (ODM1)The Brunei Times
