COOPERATIVES were urged to be dedicated and responsible in upholding their principles.

The call was made by Pg Hj Tajuddin Pg Md Salleh, acting director of Brunei Industrial Development Authority (BINA) at the launching of Kg Perpindahan Mata-Mata Cooperatives, Kopermata, yesterday.

"Cooperatives is very different from other organisations, as it is an autonomous body that requires volunteers to work for the good of the community in areas of economy, social and culture," he said.

Each cooperative, he said, should adhere to the Cooperative Act Par 84, ensuring that the cooperative should be maintained and administered effectively and achieving the objective of its establishment.

"The success and failure of the cooperative hinges on wise leadership, commitment and support from members," he stressed.

Pg Tajuddin also urged cooperatives to support and work together with Gabungan Koperasi Nasional (National Cooperatives Alliance), an umbrella for all cooperatives in the country, to further develop principles and virtues of cooperations.

In his remarks, the Chairman of Kopermata Interim Committee, Pg Dato Paduka Hj Jaludin Pg Mohd Limbang,

emphasised the need and the importance of the establishement of the cooperative which would further unite the residences of Kg Mata-Mata and generate its own income to be economically self-sufficient.

According to Pg Dato Paduka Hj Jaludin, Kg Mata-Mata had a cooperative before but due to unknown circumstances, it had to shut down.

"This is the opportunity for the core members of the cooperative to witness, benchmark or take in the best practices from the past cooperation and apply it to the new cooperation," said the chairman.

He also expressed his hopes that the leaders of the new cooperative would take appropriate steps and learn from past mistakes.

He also urged the cooperative leaders to learn from experienced officers of BINA to further develop the cooperative. (SHS1)The Brunei Times
