Museum briefing on Books Preservation Act

THE Museums Department yesterday held a briefing on the Preservation of Books Act in Temburong, as part of an awareness programme to outline the purpose of the enactment.

The briefing was held in conjunction with the International Museums Day 2008,which falls every May 18.

Mohd Said Hj Mohd Taha, the presenter of the briefing, explained that the act consists of seven chapters.

He placed particular emphasis on chapter 3(1), which states that the publisher of every book published in Brunei (whether for sale or otherwise) shall deliver at his own expense three copies of the book to the director of the Museums Department within one month after publication.

He further elaborated that publishers who fail to deliver any books to the director may face a penalty of $6,000.

A similar briefing on the National Archives of Brunei Darussalam Act 1975 was presented by Mohamad Jefri Hj Sabli, the curator of Archives Wednesday in Bangar, Temburong.

The act, which provides for the management of government records and the preservation of public records and archives in Brunei, is divided into four parts and 19 clauses.

The act also provides for, among other matters, the appointment and authority of the director, function of the Advisory Board, authorisation for the disposition of valueless records, access of archives to the public for research, prohibition of exports of public records and archives and provision for regulations to enhance the enforcement in the provisions of the Act.

The curator highlighted that there will be a $4000 fine and imprisonment of six months to any person guilty of infringing any provisions of the act.

In addition to the presentations, several activities which include a colouring competition for school children and exhibitions from various sections of the Museums Department were organised to mark International Museums Day. (YZH1)
