More aid raised via SMS for Myanmar-China relief fund

ANOTHER $100,000 was added yesterday to the Cyclone Nargis Myanmar and China Earthquake Humanitarian Relief Fund, pushing the total funds collected via SMS to $264,955.87.

The latest contributions came from the Yayasan Sultan Hj Hassanal Bolkiah (YSHHB).

In a ceremony at the Ministry of Religious Affairs yesterday, Communications Minister Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia Hj Abu Bakar Hj Apong in his capacity as board director of the YSHHB presented the donation in the form of a mock cheque to Religious Minister Pehin Jawatan Luar Pekerma Raja Dato Seri Utama Dr Ustaz Hj Mohd Zain Hj Serudin, the co-advisor of the disaster fund.

Among top officials present at the event were Dato Paduka Hj Jemat Ampal, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports and Datin Hjh Adina Othman, the director of community development.

The Department of Community Development as the secretariat of the cyclone and earthquake fund is appealing to the public to contribute to the fund, to aid some 2.4 million victims of Cyclone Nargis that hit Myanmar on May 3, and the earthquake that shook China's Sichuan province on May 12, 2008.

Donation could be made directly at the department, via SMS or through donation boxes placed at various business premises, banks and mosques in the country.

YSHHB and the Community Development Department yesterday also handed over donations for recent fire victims in the Sultanate.

A total of $6,600 is distributed to six families from Kg Junjongan, Kg Delima Satu and Kg Burong Pingai Ayer who were recently affected by fire accidents.

The donations were presented by Dato Paduka Hj Ali Hashim Hj Daud, managing director of Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah.

Meanwhile, the Community Development Department gave $34,400 to the victims $30,800 for the families, while the remaining $ 3,600 was allocated for house restoration.

The department's contribution was presented by the guest of honour, the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Dewa Major General (Rtd) Dato Seri Pahlawan Hj Mohammad Hj Daud. The Brunei Times
