THE media is one of the channels through which the importance of oral health can be disseminated and emphasised to the public.

This was the topic of discussion yesterday at the Ministry of Health, where a dialogue on Enhancing Oralh health Promotio through the media took place.

The session was aimed to share information on how to effectively convey information on oral health to the general public.

"For us to come up with an effective way of translating our scientific knowledge about oral health into a language that our patients and lay members of the public can easily understand is not easy, " said Hjh Norsiah Hj Johari, adding that the media plays an important role in this respect.

The chief executive officer of the Dental Services Department said that effective communication of the importance of oral health is needed, as people forget 75 per cent of what they hear and read and 25 per cent of the time they misinterpret what was said.

"Most people do not want to read too much. They want to get as much information as possible with the least amount of reading," she said.

The discussion featured two speakers Professor Anthony Blinkhorn and Claire Phelan who spoke on the use of effective Dental Health Education (DHE) materials and how to use media text, respectively.

Both speakers have been in the country for the past week sharing their ideas on oral health promotion with local dental officers and nurses.

Blinkhorn highlighted the need for DHE materials to target specific groups, have a clear aim, carry a relevant message, be scientifically accurate, understandable and positive.

The professor from the University of Sydney went on to state the four P's in producing DHE materials product, price, promotion and place.

Meanwhile, Phelan, a senior policy analyst from Australia, shared how a campaign can effectively present its message to the public with the use of website, radio and television advertisements.

The dialogue, held in conjunction with the 2008 - 2012 Oral Health Agenda, was attended by senior dental officers, dental officers, dental nurses and members of the media. (JQR1) The Brunei Times
