MORE than 128 metric tonnes of dates were distributed yesterday to village heads and penghulus, as well as Royal Brunei Armed Forces and Royal Brunei Police Force commanders by His Royal Highness Prince 'Abdul Malik at the International Convention Centre yesterday.
The dates from Saudi Arabia are His Majesty's personal contribution to citizens for the upcoming fasting month of Ramadhan in September.
Each Muslim in the country is entitled to receive 300 grammes of dates.
After the official distribution, the dates will then be distributed evenly to residents of villages and mukims through the village heads and penghulu.
Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia Hj Awg Abu Bakar Hj Apong, chairman of the board of directors at the Sultan Hj Hassanal Bolkiah Foundation, thanked HRH on behalf of His Majesty's generosity of distributing the dates every year.
The distribution of dates to Muslims for the fasting month has been going on for the last 17 years in Brunei.
The dates distributed are of Mabroom type and this year's amount of dates have increased by five metric tonnes, due to the increase in the number of Muslim citizens, said the chairman.
He added that the distribution of dates has been successful over the years, with the village heads and penghulu throughout all four districts doing their part to distribute the dates to their respective village and mukim residents. (SRH1)
