Society needs to take care of elderly

Friday, August 15, 2008

A TOTAL of 73 volunteers and 11 senior citizens are currently registered with the volunteer project on family services in caring for the elderly, a number that Brunei can be proud of, as this is a first step towards building a more caring society on the welfare of senior citizens, said a State Legislative Council member.

Hj Sulaiman Hj Ahad, who is also the village head of Kampong Belingus, yesterday stressed the importance of caring for senior citizens, instead of shunning them from the rest of society.

Speaking during the launching of the volunteer project at Temburong's Belalong Hall, he said that close coordination between family members and senior citizens are critical in creating a harmonious family.

"Family members play important roles in the caring process of senior citizens, especially if the latter does not have other family members to care for them," he said.

He said that the younger generation can learn and benefit from the experiences of older generations.

"The younger generation can benefit from the experiences of the old that had been through a lot of hardship and sacrifices made for the development of the nation, regardless of whether they are in the frontline, in planning or implementation," he said.

"Youths should be cherished and guided as they are the ones who will continue our fight towards developing the country and strengthening the nation in the future," Hj Sulaiman added.

The village head further said that the volunteer project provided a platform for sharing of experiences among the old and learning by examples for the young.

He lauded the Community Development Department on their efforts to increase the senior citizens' quality of life and introduced the voluntary service that helps senior citizens as "a driving force for other agencies, both public and private to play an important role in tackling the issue of neglecting senior citizens."

Officially launched in June 2005, the volunteer project was aimed to ensure that senior citizens were given the appropriate care and attention, while involving family members in the caring of senior citizens at the same time.

The main target for the project were senior citizens aged 60 years and above, and senior citizens who are living alone. (RSH1)
