e-Kamus on its way to local market
Tuesday, August 19, 2008
BULKY dictionaries will soon be reduced to oversized paperweights with the introduction of the e-Kamus that has found its way into the Brunei market.
A product of Malaysia that is gaining popularity in neighbouring countries Singapore and Indonesia, developed by Alaf Teras Trading Sdn Bhd, the e-Kamus 5.02.07 professional edition has been offered to educators, students and the general public since August 1, 2008 and will continue its month-long marketing by local partner, Impressivecelcom Communications.
Director of Alaf Teras, Kahar Udi said that research on the product began in 2000 and successfully completed in 2005.
The e-Kamus has also been said to have found its way to countries such as Egypt, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Africa, and the United Kingdom.
As an electronic dictionary, it contains dictionaries in various languages aside from Malay and English such as Arabic, Mandarin as well as in specialty subjects such as mathematics, science, engineering, computing and medicine. The software is also equipped with a computerised voice to read the text, aiding with pronunciation woes.
One of the most convenient functions is its ability to be used with any text-based application and even on the Internet.
In keeping with the ever-evolving nature of technology, Kahar explained that the software is designed to have its dictionaries added onto with "dic" format dictionaries downloadable from the Internet.
The e-Kamus has so far been marketed through briefings and demonstrations in the Ministry of Education, and several educational institutes.
Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) will be hosting similar demonstrations at the Student Affairs' Multi-Purpose Hall from August 19 to 21, 2008 with two sessions in the morning from 8:30am to 9:45am and 10:45am to 12pm and another in the afternoon from 2:30pm to 4:30pm.
Students and lecturers as well as the public are invited to attend the demonstration. (NAS1)
