CRITICAL thinking and communication skills are essential for effective students teaching and learning, said the academic deputy principal of Anthony Abell College, Asmah Tengah.
In line with SPN 21, which aspires in enhancing critical thinking and communication skills among students, the academic deputy principal said that that was the main idea behind the thinking and communication skills competition. This competition was one of the activities lined up for the two-day student camp held at the college. "Communication skills are crucial for effective student learning, where a two-way discussion in classroom will be more productive than a teacher's one-man show in delivering his or her lesson," she said.
During the course of the student camp, she noted a lot of improvement seen in the Form 3 students involved. Some of them who were initially shy in their classroom have become more confident and outspoken during the thinking and communication skills competition.
With scenario-based questions especially designed to test student creativity, it is hoped via the competition it will improve not only students' critical thinking skills but also their confidence level in public speaking during the group presentation, according to Asmah.
In an interview with The Brunei Times she said efforts such as this should be continued as these skills are crucial not only inside classroom but also when they enter the work arena. Therefore it is important to instill these values at an early age for the benefit of the nation's future generation.
Md Firas Kalong@Ibrahim and Liza Saleh whose group emerge champion in the competition said that the contest was very useful as it improves their critical thinking, communication skills and teamwork. "Critical thinking and communication are not only essential in subjects like Geography and Mathematics among others but also essential to facilitate independent learning among students," they said.
This point of view was agreed by Akmalluddin Abdullah who said it is crucial for students to possess communication skills in order to facilitate effective discussion with their teachers and peers.
Awarded as best young leader, Akmalluddin commented that though critical thinking and communication skills are quite low among those he knew it still could be improved for instance by joining debate, public speaking competition to name a few.
Another student, Abd Hakeem Hj Abd Hassan, who emerged champion in the talent show competition said that the student camp has motivated him to study even harder for their upcoming exam and through it he has learnt on the importance of teamwork in the success for any task at hand.
The top three groups for the competition were awarded with prizes at the closing ceremony yesterday by Iskandar Hj Alias, the head of the Seria-based Oil and Gas Discovery Centre (OGDC) along with other winners for the other five categories contested.
