Belait mosque programmes attract more young people

AN INCREASING number of youths are performing tarawih prayers and participating in mosque activities, as a result of mosque's Takmir (Administrative) Committee to entice youths to be more active, an imam said.
Chief imam of Muhammad Jamalul Alam Mosque in Belait, Ahmeddani Hj Abd Rahman, said that more youths are taking part in mosque activities and performing tarawih prayers this year, compared to last year.
The key is to tailor the mosque activities to meet youths' interests, he said. The mosque conducts tadarus, tarawih and motivational talk for youths.
The chief imam also called for youths to participate in any activities organised by mosques, in realising His Majesty's aspiration to make the country as a Zikir nation.
Fauzee Hj Anwar, a third-year Universiti Brunei Darussalam undergraduate, said that the number of participating youths and senior citizens are about the same at Perpindahan Rakyat Jati Kg Mentiri Mosque.
"Not only are the efforts made by village consultative council and mosque's takmir committee strong contributors for this, but the family who encourage their children to go to the mosque plays a role as well," said Fauzee.
However, he said that the number might decrease towards the end of Ramadhan, as they are more occupied with Hari Raya preparations.
"If they are not familiarised with the mosque now, the concept will be alien to them when they get older, he said, adding that efforts to encourage youths to participate in mosque activities must be maintained. Hj Hafidzan Hj Yahya, religious teacher form PGGMB School, agreed with Fauzee that the mosque's Takmir Committee's ability to attract its youths is one of the contributors for this trend.
He lauded the local mosque's efforts in ensuring the nation's youths are moving in the right path by making them closer to the mosque.
A 19-year-old student from Perdana Wazir Secondary School, who did not want to be named, said that it is up to the individual to be more active in mosque activities.
"No matter how much effort put up by the respective bodies, it will be useless if one does not take up the initiative," he said. (DKR1)
