A TOTAL of $6,710 raised by the Brunei Shell Ladies Association was donated to the orphaned and needy students attending the Pg Jaya Negara Pg Hj Abu Bakar Secondary School.
The turnover ceremony was held at the school in Kuala Belait yesterday.
The amount was collected through the group's fund as well as from voluntary contributions made by its members and employees of Brunei Shell Petroleum Sdn Bhd.
Some 61 students received $110 each to finance their education needs.
On hand to present the funds to representatives from the school was Hjh Ning Lela Dato Paduka Hj Mohamad, the ladies group's treasurer.
A tahlil ceremony was held at the school.
The event was followed by the breaking of fast and evening prayers.
The activity is part of the group's annual programme to help the less fortunate residents of the Belait District.
The association was formed to instill the feeling of "community togetherness" by fostering closer relations amongst members and other groups, societies or associations towards the collective goal of constructive contributions to the community.
The association wished to be recognised as highly mobile in implementing projects related to socioeconomic issues, Islamic religious activities, education, trade skills, health, society, art and culture, environmental protection and preservation and others.
The group organises annual charity bazaars, public talks on health and family values to raise public awareness and conducts visits to relevant institutions in the sultanate.
Members also participate in cleaning campaigns and sponsor youth programmes or seminars. The Brunei Times
