Buy local products, Bruneians urged

Monday, September 8, 2008

LOCAL residents were urged to shop and spend locally, while getting acquainted with local products in the charity bazaar at Seria District Office's Hall in Kuala Belait.

Dr Hjh Jamilah Hj Md Yusof, wife of Belait district officer, said that the bazaar coincides with the concept of Kenali Negara Kitani (Get to Know Your Country) campaign, where residents are encouraged to buy local products, thereby contributing to the country's economic development.

During the launching of the 23rd Charity Bazaar for Hari Raya yesterday, she hoped that the bazaar will serve as a platform for women to be involved in small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

"Not only will it improve women's competitiveness, but their participation will aid in their contribution to their household income," she added.

Organised by the Belait branch of Pertiwi Association, Hjh Jamilah said the bazaar showed the commitment of the non-profit organisation in elevating women's positions in society

"Not only has the association made it easier for local residents to shop for the upcoming Hari Raya, but they are also given the chance to do charity," said Fatimah Tanji, chaiperson of the Pertiwi Association's Belait Branch.

Some 10 per cent of the revenues generated from the bazaar will be donated to the Belait Orphans Fund and Special Needs People's Funds, said Fatimah, who is also chairperson of the event.

Last year, $3,263 out of the $32,263 made, will be donated to the Belait Orphan Fund and Disabled People's Funds, she said.

Held since 1983 as part of the association's annual project, this year's charity bazaar offers a variety of products, from cakes and biscuits to women's accessories and floral arrangement.

Pertiwi emphasises on enhancing the culture of cooperation and unity among its members and the female community as a whole.

The charity bazaar will operate from 10am to 10pm everyday till the eve of Hari Raya. (DKR1)
