A HIGH demand for meat during the month of Ramadhan and preparations for the festive Hari Raya season has prompted local meat companies to make early arrangements for an increase in their usual order of meat.
Due to the high demand for meat during Ramadhan, Halaqah Sdn Bhd, one of the main providers of meat to the country, has increased overseas orders of up to 50 per cent more than the usual volume to ensure sufficient availability of meat in the country.
Executive Director of Halaqah Pg Hassan Pg Hj Damit, told The Brunei Times that the company had already arranged the order for meat earlier in the months of July and August this year.
When asked about the price increase in meat, Halaqah executive director Pg Hassan Pg Hj Damit said: "The price increase is acknowledged and still very much acceptable by our clients."
"Price increase is a fairly normal case which occurs every now and then from our suppliers overseas. In some meat products, the increase is in the range of between five and eight per cent and in others are less," added Pg Hassan.
The executive director said that in preparation for Hari Raya, the company has imported around 340,000kg of frozen buffalo meat, 90,000kg of chilled/frozen beef, 3,000kg of airflown chilled lamb and 24,000kg of frozen lamb/mutton meat.
The company has also imported live cattle from Australia of which the consignment will be delivered by ship and is expected to arrive on September 21.
"With the above volume, we are fairly confident that the supply for Hari Raya is very much enough," said Pg Hassan.
A statement from the Agriculture Department said that the public does not have to worry about the supply of food during the Ramadhan and Hari Raya season as there is a sufficient availability of meat that has been provided by His Majesty's government.
Based on observations made by the department, local chicken production for this year on the whole indicates an increased trend during the months of January and August when local chicken production has reached up to 13,040 metric tonnes, equivalent to 8.7 million birds.
This shows an increase of 2.61 per cent compared to the same period last year.
According to the statement by the department, chicken production for this month is expected to increase by 14.13 per cent (or 1,780 metric tonnes) compared to the same month last year.
As with chicken production, the production of eggs has also increased between January and August this year with a 5.36 per cent increase (over 79 million eggs) compared to last year.
Egg production for the month of September is also expected to see a rise of up to 2.60 per cent (1,004 million eggs).
The Agriculture Department also stated that a total of 1,050 cattle will be imported to the country from Australia by a local slaughtering company due to arrive next week.
