LESS fortunate residents of the Temburong district were given a ray of hope this coming Hari Raya as four ministries coordinated to conduct a working visit yesterday to the homes of these residents on behalf of His Majesty's Government.

Present for the working visit was the Minister of Energy at the Prime Minister's Office, Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Dewa Major General (Rtd) Dato Seri Pahlawan Hj Mohammad Hj Daud, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Pehin Orang Kaya Setia Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Dr Hj Ahmad Hj Jumat and Deputy Minister of Religious Affairs Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Hj Badaruddin Pengarah Dato Paduka Hj Othman.

The Energy Minister said the four ministries were involved in the national committee to provide assistance to the poor and less fortunate, especially in repairing and renovating their houses.

The visit served as a follow-up activity to check up on the results of the repairs made on the homes of two families who had been approved for the assistance. The repairs on their homes would be completed in time for them to celebrate the festive season.

Pehin Dato Hj Mohammad told The Brunei Times that the committee was helping the poor in time for Raya because it had the capital to fix their homes and because the task of repairing these houses could "be done easily". "We want them to enjoy themselves during Hari Raya," he said.

The senior government officials visited the homes of Pg Lasah Pg Hj Hidup and Ahmad Fadzillah Hj Mohd Zain. The Brunei Islamic Religious Council (MUIB) covered the $47,300 cost of repairs to their houses, while the Department of Public Works supervised the projects.

The delegation also visited several other houses in the district, who were still under the consideration of the council on whether they would be eligible to receive assistance. These homes were located in Kg Labu Estate, Kg Gadong Baru and Kg Batang Duri.

Repairs to homes were also currently in progress in the other three districts. The houses of six individuals, who have applied for assistance, were scheduled to be completed before the start of this year's Hari Raya celebrations.

Some 55 people have been given assistance in the first stage of the house assistance project for the poor members of society. They have each been provided with either three-bedroom houses on stilts or three-bedroom bungalows.

The funding for this project came from the MUIB and was directed for recipients of the zakat (tithes). For those who were not recipients of the zakat, the council would notify the appropriate authorities to assist them. A total of 33 houses would be built in the Brunei-Muara area, whereas four would be constructed in Belait, 10 in Tutong and eight for the Temburong district.

The project was managed by the special committee that was appointed for the task and was co-chaired by the permanent secretaries of the Prime Minister's Office and the Ministry of Development.

The permanent secretary of the Ministry of Development, Hj Mohd Rozan Dato Paduka Hj Mohd Yunos, Temburong District Officer Matusin Orang Kaya Sura Hj Tuba, as well as senior officers from other relevant agencies also participated in the working visit.
