REUSABLE bags were distributed to customers in department stores all over the Gadong area yesterday in the Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation's (Jastre) ongoing efforts to raise awareness on the usage of these bags.

Three-hundred and fifty bags were distributed at the Utama Grand Supermarket while Sin Kew Hin Department Store doled out 200 bags. Meanwhile, Jaya Hypermart Department Store were given 300 bags and Hua Ho Department Store in Gadong were handed 250 bags to distribute to customers.

Customers doing their shopping at these department stores were given the reusable bags while doing their purchases where the cashiers were also instructed to give more information to the customers on the environmentally-friendly benefits of reusable bags by Jastre officers.

A representative from Jastre stated that this initiative was a follow-up to the objectives of the World Environment Day held earlier on June 5, themed "Low Carbon Economy".

He also revealed that the aim was to reduce the habit of using plastic bags in the near future and spoke of how plastic bags are biodegradable for 1,000 years.

The future generation will be the ones to suffer the consequences of this generation's environmentally irresponsible actions, said the Jastre representative.

He further stated that reusable bags are convenient as they can be used daily and expressed his hope that more people will be made aware of this environmentally-friendly initiative and participate in this effort to preserve the environment.

Before the arrival of the industrial revolution which prompted the use of plastic bags, people had another alternative to bags when it came to grocery shopping, said the representative.

He spoke of how in the past, his great-grandparents used baskets for their shopping and remarked how well it worked for them. Reusable bags are the modified means to bring the culture back, he said.

According to the representative, Jastre has also conducted television promotions and awareness to ensure that locals will gear towards this environmental awareness in the hopes that people will break the habit of using plastic bags in the future.

He further said that even if it is a slow process, it is still doable. He pointed out that Singapore began efforts to raise this awareness two years ago and are doing quite well for themselves now.

Jastre is no stranger to inculcating awareness, they have also distributed bags to supermarkets in Tutong and Kuala Belait. The Brunei Times
