Brunei Consumer Price Index unchanged in March, says JPKE

Friday, May 15, 2009
THE Consumer Price Index (CPI) was flat in March this year from the previous month, based on figures from the Department of Economic Planning and Development or JPKE.

While the index showed no percentage change on a month-on-month basis, the year-on-year inflation rate stood at 2.4 per cent.

Inflation for the first quarter of the year was 2.5 per cent compared to the same period last year.

In march, the food and non-alcoholic beverages basket, which is the biggest component of the Brunei CPI, recorded a 0.6-per cent decline from the previous month.

"Some food items recorded notable price increases in March 2009 over February 2009 such as cauliflower, temanong, Lady's fingers, bean curd stick, bitter gourd and carrot," said the department. "Meanwhile, some food items showed notable price decreases such as kangkong, pumpkin, spinach, sawi hijau and small prawn."

The increase in the overall index for the first three months of the year was due to higher prices of items in all baskets except communication, education and medical and health.

Other baskets in the CPI are: food and non-alcoholic beverages, clothing and footwear, housing, water, electricity and maintenance, household goods, services and operation, transport, recreation and entertainment, and miscellaneous goods and services.
