VARIOUS Grandmasters, International Masters and Fide Masters are expected to converge on the Net at 2pm on July 15 to participate in the First Brunei Internet Chess Blitz.

The contest is held in conjunction with the celebration of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzadin Waddaulah's 62nd birthday.

The contest will be played in a 13-round format with each round taking three minutes.

The champion will take home US$1,500 (B$2,043).The on-line chess tournament is co-organised by the Brunei Chess Federation (BCF) and the Internet Chess Club (ICC), the world's premier on-line subscription chess service.

ICC has traditionally been the first choice of professionals with more members, more Grandmasters and more volunteers than any other classical game services on the Internet.

ICC's more than 35,000 paying members from all over the world regularly enjoy playing casual or tournament chess games against each other, watching others play including hundreds of titled chess masters, attending online lectures, classes and special events or simply socialising with fellow chess enthusiasts in a club house that is always open.

Registration for the tournament is free and is open to chess players from all over the world.

Brunei residents are invited to play at the Brunei Chess Centre, Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex and at the Brunei Shell Recreation Club Chess Centre. They are, however, advised to bring their own notebook computers.

Those who wish to play from the comfort of their homes must log on to the ICC server at least 10 minutes before the start of the tournament.

A ceremony was held at the Brunei Chess Centre in Berakas yesterday to launch the tournament.

Organising committee, the Brunei Muara District Executive Chess Championship 2008 Committee, signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with sponsors Alif Technologies (Platinum Sponsor), PT Wai IIIa Sarana Utama & Pt Talenta Pratama Mandiri (Gold Sponsor), Pines Enterprise-Verde (Gold Sponsor) and Adison Marketing Services at the ceremony yesterday.

The guest of honour at the ceremony was Awg Hj Haris Othman, the assistant Brunei Muara district officer.
