'Uphold good image of Brunei'

THE Perkampungan Sivik Mahasiswa/Mahasiswi Negara Brunei Darussalam Seberang Laut Tahun 2007 or the Civic Village for Undergraduates Studying Overseas 2007 came to an official close yesterday afternoon.
Students were provided with information relating to education, religion, national security, economy, social security, ruling system as well as His Majesty's government.
Hj Mahrub Hj Murni, acting director of the Information Department stated that he hoped the information channelled would strengthen their national identity while studying overseas.
He emphasised that students would be able to represent a noble image of Brunei in the international community overseas.
Siti Reyhanah Hj Yakob, the chairperson for the overseas students' 'in her speech to fellow students by quoting Mahatma Gandhi, "You must be the change you wish to see in the world," in the hope that they would see the role they play in the future upon completing their education.
She called upon fellow students to come together and join hands to contribute towards the development of Brunei.
She emphasised that she "was grateful the programme was created because it has been successful as it has given greater understanding for them of their role as Bruneian citizens and what is expected from them once they complete their education".
She admitted that the road ahead is more difficult in comparison to the road they are currently on and hopes that the information will help them.
Hj Mohd Daud Hj Mahmud, deputy permanent secretary of planning and policy of the Ministry of Education, said that "all scholarships offered by the government is a sign of the seriousness of the government in bringing about the future children of Brunei to be experts, educated in higher education in fields that are deemed needed."
He called upon students to work hard as the government is not tolerant towards students who are complacent in their studies.
"If a student is found to have failed in his or her studies because of laziness, the government will not hesitate to terminate their scholarship immediately".
87 students participated in the course.
