US, Brunei navies ties closer
Saturday, August 11, 2007
THE OPERATIONAL activities conducted this week under CARAT exercise have enhanced both the US and Royal Brunei Navies' capabilities and characterised the model of how both sides can cooperate and work together to address issues, said USS Jarret Commander, Eric Kyle."This week our navies have taken a step closer to ensure these goals are met," Commander Kyle said in his speech at the closing ceremony of CARAT onboard the USS Jarret yesterday .
"By training, interacting, dining and communicating together, the operational sanctuary we had enabled us to become a cohesive team, serving side by side," the commander added. He conceded that the exercise had mutually benefited the two navies whereby it improved interoperability and tactical collaboration in a training environment. "I can say without hesitation that it was a wonderful success," he said.
He stated that this year's CARAT exercise was the 13th being held, and regional contingencies are likely to be the norm in the future. "Plus it is valuable for friends and allies to continue to train together to improve the interoperability and build cooperative relations."
He added: "Over the past week, our navies have accomplished great new things together. Ashore, we conquered jungles and survival training."
He also spoke of the affinity attained with the Royal Brunei Navy during the week-long stopover. "We have come to know each other not only through naval exercises, but also through cultural activities. We have built our friendships through sportsmanship, entertainment and fine dining."
He then moved on to touch lighter subjects such as the hospitality shown by Bruneians.
"One of the best ways to build a friendship is over a great meal," he remarked, "and we had several together."
"I think that all service members, no matter where they are located on the globe, will agree that a good meal does wonders for morale. The Brunei chefs have certainly satisfied our tastebuds," he said while thanking them as well for their "wonderful cuisine and kind hospitality".
He also mentioned the "relations activities" conducted by the US and Royal Brunei Navies that demonstrated their support for both their interests. The charity work carried out at Pusat Ehsan "will help improve the quality of life and the general health and welfare of the residents".
He concluded his speech by thanking the sailors of the Royal Brunei Navy and also the citizens of Brunei Darussalam. "Thank you for hosting the US Navy this week. We had thoroughly enjoyed our stay here and have learned a great deal through this bilateral exercise. This exercise will go a long way forth in increasing our interoperability and continued developments critical to our ability to work side by side. We look forward to training with you again in 2008."
