Brunei Cup expected to boost sultanate's tourism sector

Friday, August 24, 2007

THE annual basketball tournament, is expected to boost the sultanate's tourism sector as well as put Brunei on the professional basketball circuit.

"What started as a local basketball tournament seven years ago, has now turned into a professional basketball tournament," said Jason Ting, Sales and marketing Manager of Sunlit Advertising.

"The Brunei Cup, in its fourth year, started to introduce professional basketball teams to play, and now in it's seventh year, out of six teams we have six professional basketball teams, from around the world," he added.

He said that by maintaining the standard of only having professional basketball players at the tournament, it encouraged people from outside Brunei to come to the country just for the match.

"We have people coming from the neighbouring countries such as Labuan, Kota Kinabalu and Kuching, coming for the weekend to see the opening ceremony as well as the first couple of matches," said Jason.

The Brunei Cup, organised by Sunlit Advertising, will start their first match this Saturday, August 25, and the general public are just as excited as the organisers.

Yong Yaw Ren, a Project Manager in his 20s said, "I can't wait for the matches to start, watching professionals play gives a whole different excitement than watching local basketball players play".

"The South Korean team playing in the upcoming Brunei Cup will not just be coming with their team officials, but also with some journalists who will be giving exposure not only to the team but Brunei as well," said Jason.

Sunlit Advertising works closely with the various embassies in Brunei to liaise with the professional basketball circuits in their respective country to send professional teams to play in the Brunei Cup.

"Previously when we first started we asked the Philippines Embassy to help us bring the Philippines Basketball Association (PBA) teams to Brunei. At first the PBA teams were reluctant but they came the following year and keep coming back. " I feel they must have seen the some value in this tournament and that keep them coming back."The Brunei Times
