IT was a small community of some 50 Malaysians, but the spirit of nationalism reverberating through the air was core-deep.
Malaysian citizens in Brunei as well as distinguished guests gathered yesterday morning at the Malaysian High Commission in Jalan Kebangsaan to celebrate their country's 50th Independence Day.
As soon as the Malaysian High Commission, His Excellency Dato' Ku Jaafar Ku Shaari and wife Datin Zakiah arrived, the event commenced with the national anthem chorused by all those who were present as they witnessed the flag hoisting ceremony to mark the anniversary of their freedom.
"The independence and success that we have achieved is not free," said His Excellency in a speech after the Doa Selamat was read to bless the ceremony.
He called for strong commitment and resolution within the citizens in their endeavour to develop their country.
This, together with cooperation from the government will result in a country that is not only prosperous, but also progressive in its aspirations towards reaching their 2020 vision.
"I hope that all of you will maintain this zeal of camaraderie and continue to respect the local culture and tradition as well as their rules and regulations," he added.
The guests were then invited to sing two patriotic songs the Kerana mu Malaysia and Jalur Gemilang.
His Excellency led the assembly in singing as the assembly sang along while enthusiastically waving their national flags.
Towards the end of the second song, His Excellency approached the raised platform and simultaneously roared the words "Merdeka!", or independence, as he punched his fist into the air three times, an act wholeheartedly echoed by citizens present.
In the spirit of the occasion, certificates of appreciation and gifts in the form of $200 cash deposits were given to the best Malaysian students who are studying in the sultanate.
The students were: Chan Chung Sung, currently a sixth form student at Maktab Duli Pengiran Muda Al-Muhtadee Billah. He was awarded for achieving 10 A's in his GCE O'level examinations.
The second recipient was International School Brunei student, Muhamad Raushan Mohd Yuzer, who attained all A's in his GCE O'levels. He is one of the top 10 students in the International Baccalaureate.
The third recipient is Farah Mat Husin, a Jerudong International School student, for getting distinctions in all her GCE O'levels with a two-A star.
Guests later mingled as they enjoyed the al fresco Malaysian buffet breakfast served at the compound of the premises.
