Monday, September 3, 2007

THE Brunei royal family departed from Malaysia yesterday, calling time on a memorable occasion not for just Malaysians but also Bruneians who were privy to the extensive coverage of the Merdeka celebrations, as all eyes were on Malaysia, this weekend.

His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah, the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, along with Her Majesty Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Hjh Saleha and Her Royal Highness Pengiran Isteri Azrinaz Mazhar were in Malaysia prior to the Merdeka celebrations which took place on August 30-31 in Kuala Lumpur.

After being one of the earliest of the distinguished guests to arrive in Kuala Lumpur, His Majesty was also one of the last to leave, departing Malaysia yesterday from the Royal Malaysian Air Force's Subang Airbase in the afternoon.

"I believe it says a lot that His Majesty made the time to be in Malaysia, it just underlines how close Brunei and Malaysia are," said Mohammed Hamdi, from Brunei Darussalam.

Another Bruneian stated his envy at what Malaysia have achieved in their 50 years, and hopes that Brunei Darussalam can emulate its regional counterpart.

"It's not long before Brunei will turn 25 years old, and we celebrate our own national day. We will need to show what Brunei is capable of too," said a civil servant who spoke on condition of anonymity.

During his stay in Kuala Lumpur, His Majesty joined other heads of state and representatives of government, including HRH Prince Andrew, the Duke of York and HRH Prince Vajiralongkorn, Crown Prince of Thailand. It was during a surprise visit to the Jame Alam Shah mosque in the heart of Kuala Lumpur that surprised many people, catching most of the Friday congregation unawares.

During a special High Tea reception at Istana Melawati, following, His Majesty joined other distinguished guests hosted by the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin, the Paramount Ruler of Malaysia.

In the evening, the Bruneian royals joined the Sultans of Malaysian states and the Agong in the Giant Merdeka celebrations at Stadium Negara.
