The first place for the Realistic Painting Category (A1) went to Hj Mohd Abidin Hj Rashid for his creation aptly titled Simpur.

Lastly, the primary school level was won by Long Tze Yen from St Andrew's School.

The competition was initiated by Brunei Shell Petroleum Sdn Bhd and in partnership with the Language and Literature Bureau as well as STEP centre of the Ministry of Education, especially at the national level.

Dr Grahaeme Henderson, the managing director of Brunei Shell Petroleum, in his speech expressed his delight at the overwhelming response to the competition.

So far, BSP has been supporting the Heart of Borneo initiative strongly and has "already committed significant funds and resources for its implementation at the national level," he said.

The move to be involved with the Heart of Borneo initiative is considered to be a landmark environmental ambition.

"Everyone has a key role to play in protecting the environment, including governments, industry and indeed, all of us as individuals," he said.

The objective of the competition, he added was to use a creative and fun way of involving everyone in Brunei Darussalam to enhance both the knowledge and understanding of the nation's spectacularly unique and pristine environment. Thus a special category for children, which has been used by schools as a learning opportunity.

According to a report from the Chief Adjudicator, Dato Paduka Hj Abdul Jalil Hj Abd Rahman, the judges had to judge 96 paintings and 124 photographs which he deemed as a "very enjoyable and gratifying experience".

He said that the the entries submitted were all of very high standard and "bearing in mind that they were the products of artists and photographs who were not professional" can be considered an achievement at most.

The chief adjudicator said: "The most encouraging factor was the participation of school students because they were courageous enough to compete with adults who were more experienced than them."
