Dates distribution in Belait

Monday, September 17, 2007

MORE than 50,000 boxes of dates were allocated for the people of the Belait district this Ramadhan month.

The distribution of the dates were made through the respective village heads and committee members of the Mukim and Village Consultative Councils.

According to one of the distributors, Hj Malek, the head of Kg Pandan, Mumong, some 50,000packets of dates all weighing around 300 grams each were distributed to all 17 villages and 7 mukims throughout the Belait district by the district officer days before the Ramadhan month began.

The dates were initially distributed by the district officer to the heads of the various villages and mukims.

In turn, they are distributed to the residents of each village and mukim.

According to Hj Malek, his mode of distribution is done through word of mouth.

Residents of the village are required to come in and fill in a form stating how many family members are in their household.

This includes the number of children, maids and other people in the household.

According to a Kg Pandan resident, the village head's open-door policy has made obtaining of dates much easier to do.

The unnamed resident as well as the distributors also say that the distribution process is quite flexible. One need not come in person to obtain the form and dates, but can get them from family members.
